My family and friends review Debonne Winery

If you live in the Northeast Ohio area and drink wine, chances are you have at least heard of Debonne Winery in Madison OH. If you're new to the area or just visiting, this winery is the largest in the state. They call it an estate winery.

Basically, you will find everything at Debonne. A huge wine selection, food (a restaurant and also a grille), always entertainment going on, a butt load of events such as, hot air balloon rides and old time car shows, just to name a few. The events are my favorite feature here.

The thing I have always found true with Debonne Winery is there are so many mixed reviews. Some people love it and some people hate it. But this is a hugely successful winery, out of all the wineries in Ohio, this winery probably brings in the most revenue. If people "hate it" how did it grow so large?

I was never exactly sure what was the root cause of so many conflicting reviews of this Ohio winery. But I was determined to get to the bottom of this and discover the reason. To accomplish this, one summer night I was visiting my parent at their lake community, my sister and her friends were there and many of my parents friends and I knew many of these people had been to Debonne Vineyards.

So as I sat around the fire with this group of people I broke out a bottle of Pinot Gris from Debonne and started to tell everyone how great the wine and winery was and the more obnoxious I got, the more expressive the people around the fire were on their reviews of this winery.

The Lake Poeple's Reviews of Debonne Winery

My Mother - She loves everything. The wines, the food the events, especially the hot air balloon rides.

My Sister - She is much like my mom but she says you can find many wineries in the area with better wines.

My Father - He absolutely hates the wines, the food is alright but he loves the classic car show and he also hopes he never has to ride in another hot air balloon with my mother and sister.

My Brother-in-law - He hates the winery.

Jill - She took one sip of the Pinot Gris, looked into my eyes, squeezed my knee and asked if I was single, Jill has never been to Debonne Winery.

Nicole - She is not crazy about the wines but she loves their house brewed beers. I think Nicole is a lush.

Jerry - He has been there once and couldn't care-less to go back. In all fairness, Jerry is not a wine drinker.

Bruce - No, don't ever go there. Drinking their wine is like drinking Listerine.

Nacy - Even though she lives in the small town of Madison, Ohio she has never visited Debonne Winery. But she did say she really like the Pinot Gris I had brought to the fire.

Robin - She said this was her favorite winery in Northeast Ohio and got in an argument with anyone who had anything bad to say about the place.

Timmy - fell off his chair and I think he is still trying to get up.

At the end of the review, I saw a pattern. Most people love the events at Debonne. Most people think the food is good. But when it comes to their wines its usually the women who love them and the men who hate them.

Wineries list for Northwest Ohio

How are you today? I hope good!!! I decided to make a post on a Ohio wineries list for Northwest Ohio. If you are looking for something to do in this part of the state of Ohio visiting a winery is not a bad choice. I find wineries to be much more interesting and fun compared to a hole in the wall bar and believe me there are many hole in the wall bars in this area of Ohio, especially if you are near Toledo.

Spending time at a winery is much different than spending your night at a bar getting drunk on cheap beer. That's why I want to make a post here with a Ohio wineries list for the Northwest region of the state.

Compared to a bar, you will usually find much more interesting and friendly people. Many of these places also have great entertainment or events going on. And another advantage is many of these establishments not only have great wine but they also serve great food. In fact, if you are just searching for a great place to eat, many offer better food menus than stand-alone restaurants.

And the number one reason I feel visiting a winery is a much better choice compared to a hole in the wall bar... No bouncers to through you out!!!

old firehouse winery reviews

In the past 10 years, my family and I have been to the Old Firehouse winery in Geneva, Ohio at least 50 times. Not strictly to drink and buy wine, also for dinner. Overall, I can't remember any one time I felt disappointed with the wine, food or service.

Myself, I am not a huge fan of wine, I have usually ended up at the Old Firehouse winery due to my mother and sisters planning. But, I still always had a pretty decent good time, considering I'm a guy that would rather drink a can of beer, compared to a glass of wine.

I have actually gotten pretty drunk there. There are many different wineries in the area of northeast Ohio, believe me, under my mom's and sister's influence I have been forced to visit most of them.

From my experience, The Old Firehouse winery is the best winery in the area to get drunk at. Very down to earth, informal people, somewhat like like a bar better they serve wine instead of beer.

I have had some great times at this winery. Whenever my sister calls me to go out and wants to visits a winery, I say, "Please lets go to the Firehouse". This may not be the most compatible winery for you but for me its a great Ohio winery to get drunk at.

But you may want to look into other wineries in the area because I am sure you're not much like me.

Well... Maybe you like to drink like me, but I always assume I am fairly well different than most people that visit wineries.

But if you are looking for a little bit of wine and dinner and not getting totally drunk at the wine bar. I have actually also done this. If you are looking for dinner, they have a very nice menu at this winery also. The food is top notch. They have burgers, many different sandwiches, sandwich wraps, dinner salads, and also main entries.

Northeast Ohio is home to many of the best wineries in the state of Ohio. The wineries located in Northeast Ohio can satisfy many of the things you are looking for. Whether you are looking for a quality wine bar with great Ohio wine, wine tasting and winery tours, a winery with both great food and great wine, live musical entertainment, family friendly events, a place to hold a private party or even a venue for your wedding.

A little bit of Info on Northeast Ohio wineries


Since there are well over 40 different wineries located in this area of Ohio I can not review all of them in this single post. I will begin with a few that have stood out in my past visits.


Al-Bi Winery - Located in Delroy Ohio. This is a small winery but has a great Ohio wines to go along with their friendly wine bar. The owner is great and the people you will meet at the wine bar are friendly and you are bound to meet some truly interesting people on your visit. This winery is known to have some of the best Red wines in the state and also some very good fruit wines. 



Ferrante Winery & Ristorante - Located in Geneva, Ohio. Ferrante Winery has received rave reviews for their pizza. This is not to say they don't have great wines but many people visit this winery to enjoy their pizzas.  Their wines have been entered and many state and international competitions, winning many medals. Live weekend entertainment is also offered at this winery.

Just wanted to give all my fans and other wine lovers a neat little site that I found to locate different wineries in the united states. The site is named ohiowineries.net. It looks as if the site first started reviewing all the different wineries in Ohio but has moved on to reviewing wineries in many different states.

There is a neat little map on the homepage  that allows you to click on any state and be taken to a page that links to different wineries in the different regions of each state. This provides you with address, phone #, email address and the wineries website address. Then there is also a lot of different wineries that are reviewed a little more in depth, providing information on what is go at the winery and what you can expect to experience when visiting. Also a little information about the quality of wines that are produced at these wineries.

One other thing that is neat about the site is - a map is provided for each winery. You can click on the marker on the map and enter your starting address and you will then be given driving directions to the winery you are interested in visiting.

This site was perfect for me to use when I recently made a trip to Texas. I have heard that the Texas wine industry has really began to take off in recent years so I was planning on visiting as many Texas wineries as I could as I was on my trip.


But I was very unfamiliar with the state of Texas. The maps on the Ohio winery site cam in very handy. Using the maps I was able to quickly find accurate directions to any winery I desired to visit and I found the reviews on the same site to help me find the best wineries.

Canton, Ohio and the surrounding area is home to many different quality wineries. To our knowledge there is presently 10 different wineries located either in the city of Canton or within a 45 minute drive. Also, there are a couple non traditional wineries, which are more for learning about wine making and will assist you in making your own personalized wine.

Your wedding at an Ohio winery

Ohio wineries are well known throughout the world for producing some of the absolute best sweet white wines. But the wineries in Ohio offer so much more than only wine. Ohio wineries are great venues to host special events such as: weddings, baby showers, picnics, family reunions, office parties, team building meetings. And so much more, you can find a winery to host just about any type of event.  Within reason of course...

One of the most special events in a woman's life is her wedding and the amount of time spent planning she puts into it. If you are a woman in Ohio currently beginning the planning of your upcoming wedding, I wanted to throw an idea out at you in case you're having a difficult time in deciding the best place to host your special day. Have you ever given consideration to letting one of the wineries in Ohio host your wedding?

There are well over 100 different wineries in the state of Ohio and many, do host weddings. You will have a wide variety of venues to choose from if you look more into events hosted at wineries. The following three wineries have very solid hosting accommodations:

1. Gervasi Vineyard - this winery is located in Northeast Ohio. The 55-acre setting is modeled after the Tuscany region in Italy and their is a huge beautiful pond on the grounds. They can provide both indoor and outdoor weddings and overnight accommodations.   

2. D & D Smith Winery -  very friendly place, sits on the edge of a scenic river. Provides both indoor and outdoor weddings

3.Ravens Glenn Winery - Many wine goers in Ohio consider Ravens Glenn to be Ohio's top winery. Their wedding services are also highly rated. 


Whether are not you decide to allow on having an Ohio winery wedding these types of establishments are worth checking into . 

Chagrin Falls and wine

Are you a fan of Ohio wine? Ohio isn't well known for make red wines but the white and ice wines produced in Ohio are some of the best you will find in the world. This is mainly due to Ohio having the perfect environment for growing both the Catawba and Niagara grapes and these two grape varieties are perfect for white and ice wine. There is one winery in the Cleveland area, actually located in the small suburb of Chagrin falls that have become experts at white wine production using the Niagara grape.  The winery is name Auburn Twin Oak Winery.


Twin Oak Winery took its name from the two giant oak trees that stand on its property so if you are driving there just look for two giant oaks off in the distance and head that way.


This is a very nice winery. Not only do they have great whites but they also have a very nice gift shop. And if you happen to be hungry, they have one of the best buffets you will find all put on by professional chef's.


Forget to mention - I was speaking of Ohio being one of the best areas to find white and ice wines I forgot to mention this about Twin Oak Winery, they also produce a couple very nice red wines. For their red wine production they acquire their grapes from vineyards located in California and S. America.


If you can only try one wine at this Ohio winery, that wine should be "Twin Labs" named after they two dogs.

Eldchrist Winery in Plain City Ohio

Plain City, Ohio at 8189 St. Rt. 736. The owners did a really great job at restoring an old farm house and then more hard work made it into a well established Ohio winery.

This certainly is not a huge operation, out behind their farm house is where they make their wine, in a pole barn.

But much can be said about smaller operations, when you are smaller you are more in touch with the people you serve and just because you are smaller doesn't mean the wine you produce is any less in quality.

In fact, you will find some of the best wine at smaller operations. This is because they always have their  ear to the customer, at times larger wineries lose touch with their customer's needs

Eldchrist Winery is definitely one of Ohio's smaller wineries that has not lost touch with the needs of their customer.

 This winery grows their own grapes and has a fascinating variety of grapes that they choose from to make their wines.

There is also plenty of nicely planned events at this winery.

This establishment is definitely worth visiting. 

Breitenbach Wine Cellar

Breitenbach is a winery located in northeast Ohio. 

The address: Dover, OH at 5934 Old Rt. 39

It is located in the middle of Ohio Amish country so on your visit (the drive) and the time you spend visiting the establishment it is likely that you will have a very unique experience. Well, unless you are already familiar with and well exposed to the Amish way of life.

Here is a little tip for when you are making the trip to this winery. You will feel as if you are lost. You will feel you are out in the middle of nowhere. But all of a sudden a huge Purple barn will appear in the distance. And once you see the barn you will know you have found Breitenbach.

So just keep an eye out for the big Purple barn.

The land surrounding this winery is very charming. But you may feel the winery itself is a little touristy.

There is a gift shop with handmade Amish products and their wines are alright about average and they are decently priced.

The majority of the wines you will find here are whites and fruit wines.

What can you expect if you visit this winery?
The winery has a friendly owner name Al and most of the regulars you will meet sitting around the wine bar are very friendly also. Overall good time.


How are the wines? There are many small Ohio wineries that are over shadowed by the larger wineries, many of these small Ohio wineries do not get credit for the high quality of wine they produce.


Al-Bi Winery is a perfect example of a winery that produces great wine but never gets mentioned along side of the larger, more popular wineries in the state of Ohio.


Might be the fault of the owner, their marketing may need an overhaul. The winery doesn't even have a website. In today's day and age a its almost a must that a company have its own dedicated website.


With that being said the winery does produce good wine and the environment of the winery is nice and friendly.


One recommended wine at Al-Bi Winery - Try the Foreplay Blackberry Trifecta. This is delicious.
